Climate

In the marz of Syunik the climate zones are corresponding to the altitudes. All kinds of climate typical to Armenia interchange here, namely dry tropical, temperate warm, mild, cold mountainous and snowy. The warmest area of Armenia is Meghry lowland in Syunik.

The average number of foggy days in a year makes 40. Medium air temperature in January is from +0.9C (Meghry) to –9.8C (Gorayk), in July-August +13.9 - +25.4C. Minimum air temperature is observed in Gorayk (-43C) and maximum temperature is observed in Meghry (+41C).

Annual amount of rainfall is 161mm (Meghry) and 826mm (Sisian mountain-pass). Maximum rainfall is observed in May, minimum rainfall is observed in August. In autumn the second period of abundant rainfall is observed. Allocation of rainfall is connected not only with altitudes but also the direction, position and relief of mountain chains. Especially considerable is the negative influence of mountain barriers on rainfall; more closed is the valley, less is rainfall.
