Vorotnavank is an Armenian medieval
architectural monument and a monasterial complex. It is one
of the well-known religious and cultural centers of the 10th
-15th centuries situated 4 km to the east of Sisian
on the left part of Vorotan canyon. The earlier dated building
is Sb. Stepanos Church built by Syuniats Queen Shahandukht in
the year 1000.
In 1007 Sevada, the son of Shahandukht
built the three-arched, domed church of St. Karapet with four
sacristies in the south-eastern part of Sb. Stepanos church.
To the west of these two churches an arched vestibule and other
constructions have been maintained.
Vorotnavank was surrounded by a high
wall. It had workshops, stores, a seminary, a resort and an
alms-house.
Here worked Hovhannes Vorotnetsi (1315-1398),
an Armenian medieval great philosopher and the founder of Tatev
Vardapetaran (University).
Vorotnavank monastery was destroyed
for several times by Seljuk-Turks, Mongol-Tatars, Lenk-Temur attacks, and the earthquake in 1931. At present the reconstruction
of Vorotnavank is in its last stage.
An arched bridge built by Melik Tangi
between Vorotnavank and Vorotnaberd, near Vorotan village in
1855 has been preserved.
