Historic monuments of Syunik Region
Tanahat monastery

Tanahat is a well-known Armenian architectural monument and a famous monasterial complex of Syunik. It is to the north of Arevis village.

The foundation of the monastery dates back to the 5th-6th centuries.

According to Ghevond  Alishan in the heathen period the pagan temple of Anahit goddess was in the former place of Tanahat.

The major church is called Sb. Stepanos protomartyr. It is a bright red-stone building. The stage from the part of the roof was framed by another stage, which held a part of the roof.

There was a hall and a sacristy in the church. The capitols of the columns were decorated with flowers. Near the monastery the tombs with their khachkars /cross stones/ and tombstones are preserved. Armenian spoilt writings are hardly observed on one of those tombs.

In 1975 Urartian cuneiforms engraved on both sides of a basalt obelisk were found. Today Tanahat is half-ruined.
