Goris Branch

History, Foundation, Structure

   According to the decision of Armenian Minister’s Council October 1, 1967 the branch of Armenian State Pedagogical Institute after Khachatur Abovyan was established. The purpose of its establishment was to enlarge the teachers’ staff and to provide the village schools with teacher’s staff. The world-famous physician, president of the Science Academy Victor Hambardzumyan, the well-known mathematician, vice president of the Science Academy Sergey Mergelyan, the academicians Artashes Shahinyan, Gurgen Sahakyan and many other well-known scientists held their first lectures at the institute.

    Taking into consideration the interests of the industrial development in Syunik and the demands of the engineering staff the Goris Branch of the State Pedagogical Institute of Armenia after Kh. Abovyan was reconstructed into Yerevan Polytechnical Institute according to the decision of the Armenian Government September, 1984. Later in 1990 it was renamed as the Branch of the Armenian Engineering University. A. Saradyan, science candidate, professor-assistant was appointed the head of the branch. During his service years the Branch made a remarkable progress. In 1989 Yu. Sapharyan, who had protected the candidate’s thesis, was appointed the head of the Branch. During his working activities new equipment was installed in the institute, considerable attention was paid to the research programs, young lecturers were involved in these programs.

    At present the Branch consists of 9 sectors, which are included in the following 3 departments:

Technical subjects department

• The Mathematics sector
• The Physics and general subjects sector


Professional subjects department

• The Electronics sector
• The Social-science subjects sector

Pedagogical department

• Pedagogical sector
• Foreign languages sector
• Armenian language and literature sector
• Chemistry and biology sector
• Physical training sector

   Through the above-mentioned departments the lecturers specialization of bachelor engineering and graduates program is implemented on the following professions:

1. Mathematics and informatics
2. Biology and chemistry
3. Armenian language and literature
4. Primary education Pedagogy and methodology
5. History
6. Economics and management of the enterprises (Machine-building branch)
7. Industrial electronics
8. Electric-supply


Educational Materials


   The Branch has got the necessary locations, laboratories, which are provided with modern educational and laboratory equipment for organizing the teaching programs.
   The Branch has been provided with modern computer techniques and Internet with the support of the international IREX/IATP organization.

Lecturers’ staff

   The professors and the lecturers’ staff of the Branch involves 44 workers among them three science doctors, professors, one science candidate, professor, one science doctor, professor assistant and 6 science candidates professor assistant.

Students’ staff

   In 2001-2002 academic year the number of Bachelor engineering and graduates students was 580.


Entrance examinations

   In 2002-2003 academic year Goris Branch implemented entrance examinations of the students on the 8 professions in the scope of Bachelor engineering and graduates program. In the result of the exams 45 free of charge and 74 chargeable students entered the institute.


Teaching activity

   Since 1999 rating system was accepted in all the courses due to which the students’ progress remarkably increased reaching up to 85 % in 2001-2002 academic year.

Research programs

    In 2001-2002 academic year with the support of the Government 3 science research programs were implemented by professors A. Martirosyan, R. Vardanyan, A. Amiryan. The results of the programs were published in about 25 scientific articles.

Financial resources

   During the recent few years due the increase of chargeable students the out-budget of the Branch has also increased. In 2002 it was about 60 mil drams. It gave an opportunity to raise the lecturers’ salaries up to 35 thou drams
