  Geographical Position and Climate
   Sisian is situated 6 km south of the Yerevan-Meghry highway, on the both banks of the river Vorotan.
The medium temperature in January is –5C, and +17,5C in July. There are cold strings, mineral waters and Basalt mines in the surrounding areas.
 
  Historical Glimpse of Sisian

   Sisian was included in the Tsaruk Province of the Syunyats Country of Mets Hayk. According to the narrator Moris Hasratyan Sisian is a historical settlement of Syunik. Stepanos Orbelyan also gives us information about the settlement. It testifies that Tsruk Province coincides with the present area of Sisian. In 1813 the area fell under the Russian domination. Later in 1828 in the result of Turkmenchai agreement many Armenian families from the Persian provinces Khoy and Salmast immigrated to Sisian. After the establishment of Soviet rules they were included in Zangezour province. The region of Sisian was formed according to the decision in 1930. It was called Sisavan in 1935-40 and Gharakilisa until 1995. The area is rich in historical monuments. “Zorakarer” (Karahunch), fortress-dwelling (4-3 millenium B.C.), the St. Gregor Illuminator church of the 6-7th centuries are the historical architectural monuments of Sisian. St. Gregor Illuminator church has got similarities with St. Hripsime church of Edjmiadzin. The church was built by Syunyats Prince Kohazat.

    In his work “Sisakan” Ghevond Alishan gives us important information about Sisian. It testifies that in the end of 19th century 70 Armenians and 40 Turks lived in the town.

    In 1959 Sisian had 3838 inhabitants and 7428 in 1970.

 
 Education, Culture, Health
   There are 5 secondary schools, 1 boarding school, 2 state humanitarian and national economics colleges, “Lusntag” computer and educational center, 4 kindergartens, a musical and an art schools, sports schools. There are 2 cultural houses, a library, a gallery, a historical museum, a stadium and a theatre in Sisian. The health institutions of the town are “The Sisian hospital”, “The Sisian stomatological polyclinic after K. Grigorian”, “The Sisian regional polyclinic” CJSCs and 2 drugstores.
 
Economics

   The construction of Vorotan hydroelectric station became the stimulus for the economical development of the town (1960). Other industrial building material plants, several light-industry and food production factories were constructed in Sisian. Some of them are bankrupted because of the economic crisis in the 90s.

    The building administration of Spandarian Hydroelectric Station is situated in Sisian. Several international organizations expand activities in the town. The Business Center in the town promotes the business development.

    There is also an airport in Sisian.
